EVM APPLICATION ENGINEER · REMOTE

I build high-performance blockchain infrastructure,
on-chain market automations, and backend services.

I have 3+ years of experience building production-grade software in TradFi, and 2+ years building EVM/DeFi systems alongside it.

A real-time arbitrage engine on Base and Robinhood Chain. It finds price gaps across DEX pools and closes them in one atomic transaction.

HOW IT WORKS
Reads the sequencer feed directly and keeps an in-memory liquidity graph that updates only the affected pools. Worker threads search for profitable cycles in parallel. Arbitrage opportunities are executed through a gas-optimized flash-loan Solidity contract, with pre-trade simulation to avoid paying gas costs for missed opportunities.
RESULT
  • Market-event-to-decision latency under 10 ms
  • 20,000 pools tracked
  • 200+ arbitrages executed

A self-hosted indexer that turns raw blockchain data into clean, queryable tables. It feeds the liquidity strategies below.

HOW IT WORKS
Fetches blocks and events via viem from providers like Alchemy. Polls the chain head. Recent data lives in PostgreSQL, older data in Parquet. Runs in Docker.
RESULT
  • Indexes 10 blocks/sec
  • 15M+ events/day stored
  • Full indexing costs ~$8/month in RPC compute units

A system that finds liquidity-providing (LP) opportunities on Uniswap and runs the full position lifecycle: entry, compounding and exit.

HOW IT WORKS
Scores pools by fees, volume and volatility using indexer data. Opens positions when a pool meets the entry rules. Compounding, harvesting and exiting are all automated through predefined strategies.
RESULT
  • 10+ positions managed concurrently
  • Active strategies earn back their deployed capital in fees every ~10 days
  • Passive positions auto-compound with no manual intervention

One trading interface over many DEX protocols on many chains. It adds limit orders and route aggregation to DEXes that do not support them natively.

HOW IT WORKS
An ethers.js layer puts each protocol behind one adapter interface. The routing engine quotes all adapters and picks the best. Limit orders live off-chain and fire at the target price. The UI is built in Next.js, with usability in mind.
RESULT
  • Chain- and protocol-agnostic limit orders
  • Adding a new DEX means writing one adapter

INDEPENDENT — EVM Application Engineer

I Design and build trading infrastructure, automation tools and backend systems for DeFi protocols. I work end to end, from Solidity contracts to the services that watch and act on them.

Simple systems age better.

Complexity is easy to add and expensive to remove. So I only add it when the problem truly demands it, never before.

“Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Good programmers write code that humans can understand.” — Martin Fowler

Build for failure.

On-chain markets never close, so the systems behind them can't either. I put reliability first: graceful failures, clear monitoring and safe recovery paths. That way, everyone still gets a good night's sleep.

“Everything fails, all the time.” — Werner Vogels

Good code should survive its author.

Someone else — including future me — has to be able to read this, trust it, and change it without calling me first. That means clear names, self-explanatory code and thorough tests.

“Code is read much more often than it is written.” — Guido van Rossum

Portrait of Wouter Sels

Outside of work, I spend most of my time outdoors, walking or hiking in the mountains when I can. I also go to the gym, climb, and explore new places with my partner. And I like to keep up with the latest developments in my field and read related literature.
